The newly established governance board will hold its second-ever meeting today, and the main item on the agenda is how best to find a principal - or what the academy will call a chief executive officer.
The career academy board, comprising 15 members from local businesses, the Clarke County School District, parents, the University of Georgia and Athens Technical College, plans to open the school this summer.
The career academy will admit 200 students its first year and offer introductory-level career and technical courses at Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central high schools. By 2011, the school will have a building on the H.T. Edwards campus off West Broad Street, where students can take upper-level coursework in fields with high local demand such as music, health and child care. Students also will be able to earn college credit through a dual-enrollment program with Athens Tech.
One of the first orders of business for the academy's governance board is hiring a CEO to handle day-to-day operations, said Tom Gausvik, board chairman.
